SJRCW was established during the year 1991-92 withCBM combination under the leadership of HOD, Prof.  D.E.Nagarathnamma. CBZ combination was introduced in the year 1992-93 and CBBT combination was started during the year 2005. Presently the department is headed by Asst.  Prof.Chandrakala  Shivakumar.

The department strives for excellence with the objective of teaching Botany and researching into this traditional discipline. To modernize the existing teaching learning systems of plant science, using ICT-Information and Communications Technology, along with Traditional Botanical Knowledge .  Students are trained to realize the vast potentials plants hold for human use and protect the environment.Skill development programmes are conducted regularly, along with field trips to imbibe the recent advances in other inter disciplinary branches of science, agriculture, biotechnology, chemistry, environmental science. The study is aided with electronic format, to be easily accessed by students which empowers the students on the subject and helps them in their future endeavors.
